Happy Freedom day South Africa

Happy Freedom day South Africa!

By Blessing Mhlanga. 27 April 2020.

It's over two decades since the bird of freedom landed in the yard of South Africa. 26 years ago on this day, history was made and a foundation of a new democratic South Africa was laid.

A non-racial constitution was established and democratic elections were held, ending the black sheep of Apartheid. Finally, the graves blossomed, the sky was garnished with colourful flavours and the birds of heaven joined the rainbow nation with dances of bliss.

The journey had started and so we began walking the path of freedom. Thanks to the warriors of our iconic freedom including Nelson Mandela, Oliva Tambo, Chris Hani and others - the list is endless.

But can we say we have honoured the crown of freedom? Have we made the gone warriors proud of the freedom they fought so pricelessly hard for? Not yet. Perhaps it's safe to say we have instead abused the freedom and little has been done to maintain the value and authenticity of the freedom. Yes, we have the desire to run the race of freedom with integrity and faithfulness but sometimes we and our leaders fall by the wayside and deceive ourselves with sentiments of colonization, corruption and all demonic walls that seperate us from the genuineness of our hard earned freedom.

If you have lost the true taste and spirit of our democratic South Africa and it's value, let me remind you of some of Nelson Mandela's impeccable quotes:

1. "When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw."

2. "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave is not be who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."

3. "No one is born hating another person of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

4. "Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies."

5. "For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."

6. "Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again."

7. "Lead from the back - and let others believe they are in front."

8. "I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying."

9. "As I walked out the door towards the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison."

10. "There's no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living."

Congratulations South Africa!! Well done! Enjoy your freedom! But enjoy responsible!
